UBS Downgrades Inchcape Following Reduced Asia-Pacific Profit Forecasts

UBS downgraded Inchcape from 'buy' to 'neutral' due to a projected 47% profit decline in Asia-Pacific caused by low exposure to the electric vehicle market.

UBS has downgraded automotive distributor Inchcape from 'buy' to 'neutral.' The bank cites a mismatch between the company’s product portfolio and changing consumer demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in the Asia-Pacific region.

Analysts at the bank reduced their price target for the stock from 990 pence to 750 pence. They warned that the company faces a period of revenue contraction. This adjustment follows a first half of 2026 where the firm reported a 53% decline in regional profits.

"The lack of exposure to rapidly accelerating electric vehicle demand in key markets, particularly Australia, will significantly dampen second-half profitability," analysts stated in a note regarding the downgrade.

The EV Demand Gap

The downgrade highlights a structural disconnect between Inchcape’s inventory and the Australian automotive market. In August 2026, battery-electric vehicles captured 24.9% of the Australian market share, up from 8.3% in 2025. Inchcape’s volume exposure to battery-electric models was limited to 3% throughout 2025.

This gap between market trends and the company's distribution focus is expected to affect financial performance. UBS projects that Inchcape’s Asia-Pacific profit will fall by approximately 47% year-on-year in the second half of 2026.

Revenue and Growth Outlook

The firm's growth trajectory has been revised downward. UBS now forecasts organic revenue growth of -3% for the second half of 2026, compared to the previous expectation of 0% growth.

For investors, the downgrade shows the risks inherent in traditional automotive distribution models during a transition to electrification. As consumer preferences pivot toward battery-electric platforms, distributors with legacy portfolios face shrinking margins and reduced market share in regions where EV adoption is accelerating.
