Amazon is pausing its cargo operations with 21 Air following the National Transportation Safety Board investigation into a fatal Boeing 767 runway overrun at Miami International Airport.
"After the tragic incident last weekend, we've spent time supporting the investigation and reviewing some of the surrounding circumstances, and we've decided to pause our operations with 21 Air, the operator of Flight 7598," said Kelly Nantel, Amazon spokesperson, in a statement to Reuters.
The Sept. 6 flight arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, before overrunning a runway at Miami International Airport, striking multiple ground vehicles. The accident resulted in five fatalities and left five other individuals injured.
Carrier Response and Safety Stance
Responding to the ongoing investigation and subsequent operational pause, 21 Air defended its internal protocols.
"We are confident in our safety policies, procedures and training," 21 Air said in a statement regarding the accident.
Rerouting Freight Shipments
To manage the logistics disruption caused by suspending the carrier, Amazon announced that shipments previously handled by 21 Air will be shifted to alternative providers. Affected freight will be rerouted through a network of other partner airlines, which includes:
- Sun Country Airlines
- Hawaiian Airlines
- Air Transport International
- ABX Air
- ASL Airlines
- Cargojet
As the NTSB continues its examination of the factors contributing to the runway overrun, supply chain adjustments remain in effect across Amazon's air logistics network.
