President Donald Trump has established a White House committee of inquiry to investigate Federal Reserve Governor Lisa D. Cook over allegations of making false statements regarding mortgage instruments, setting up a constitutional showdown over central bank independence.

The panel, featuring Labor Secretary and acting Office of Government Ethics director Keith Sonderling, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, and EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas, has scheduled a White House hearing for November 5 to evaluate potential grounds for removal.

"In light of the President’s repeated statements that he has already decided to fire Governor Cook, regardless of the facts and evidence, we have grave doubts that this ‘hearing’ is a legitimate one that would conform to the law," said Abbe Lowell and Norm Eisen, attorneys representing Cook, in a statement regarding the inquiry.

Committee Composition and Legal Pushback

The creation of the investigative panel follows a Supreme Court ruling that mandated procedural due process for any removal of independent agency officials. Cook has not been charged with a crime, but the administration's actions test the limits of executive authority over the independent monetary authority.

In a formal letter to the administration, Cook's legal team raised sharp objections regarding the committee's objectivity. Abbe Lowell specifically noted that panel member Kevin Hassett previously pressured Cook to take leave and suggested the administration already possessed cause to fire her.

Cook's legal representation stated that the Federal Reserve Governor cannot attend the scheduled November 5 hearing due to conflicting financial and monetary policy meetings in Europe.

Broader Political Repercussions

The inquiry has drawn criticism from congressional Democrats regarding the preservation of institutional checks and balances at the nation's central bank.

"President Trump is convening an illegitimate show trial in his dangerous quest to illegally take over our nation’s central bank," said Sen. Elizabeth Warren in a statement responding to the probe.
