Itau BBA has downgraded Nu Holdings (NYSE: NU) from 'Outperform' to 'Market Perform' because of a deteriorating macroeconomic environment in Brazil and emerging regulatory risks that threaten the fintech’s lending growth. The firm also lowered its price target for the stock from $20 to $18.
"The company is facing a combination of a more challenging consumer environment in Brazil, driven by waning fiscal and social stimulus, and potential regulatory tightening that could impact high-cost credit products," said Pedro Leduc, analyst at Itau BBA, in a note to clients.
Macroeconomic Headwinds and Regulatory Pressures
The downgrade reflects concerns that Brazil's consumer credit market is cooling. According to a report from Investing.com, inflationary pressures, specifically rising commodity and oil prices, are expected to weigh on household disposable income. This may slow the pace of credit adoption.
Beyond consumer spending, Itau BBA highlighted that the Brazilian central bank is evaluating new macroprudential measures. These regulatory tools are designed to manage systemic risk by targeting high-cost credit products, which are a core component of Nu Holdings' revenue model. By increasing capital requirements or capping interest rates on specific segments, these measures could constrain the lending growth that has powered the company's expansion.
Projected Slowdown in Earnings Growth
Financial projections from Itau BBA suggest a deceleration in the company's growth trajectory. The firm anticipates that Nu Holdings' earnings growth will slow to 14% year-over-year in 2027, a decline from the 32% growth rate projected for fiscal 2026.
This shift in outlook marks a departure from the sentiment that has surrounded the digital bank as it scaled its operations across Latin America. The transition to a 'Market Perform' rating indicates that analysts expect the stock's performance to track in line with the broader sector as credit conditions tighten.
What Is at Stake for Nu Holdings
For investors, the downgrade underscores the sensitivity of high-growth fintech models to regional regulatory and fiscal policy. As Nu Holdings continues to pivot toward higher-margin credit products, its ability to navigate Brazil’s evolving central bank mandates will be a primary factor in its profitability. The firm's ability to maintain growth amid these new constraints remains the central question for market participants monitoring the stock.
