Surrozen has received FDA clearance for its Investigational New Drug (IND) application for SZN-8141, which is a treatment for diabetic macular edema. This regulatory approval triggers a $95.1 million capital infusion from a March 2025 private placement. The funding provides liquidity to move the company's ophthalmology pipeline into clinical trials.
"FDA clearance of the SZN-8141 IND marks an important milestone for Surrozen as we advance our Wnt-based ophthalmology pipeline into clinical development," said Craig Parker, Chief Executive Officer of Surrozen.
Capital Injection and Funding
The FDA's approval satisfies the primary condition for the second closing of the company’s March 2025 private placement. According to a company press release, this closing is expected to occur on or about October 20, 2026, and will provide approximately $95.1 million in gross proceeds.
"Importantly, this milestone also satisfies the condition for the second closing of our March 2025 private placement, which is expected to provide approximately $95.1 million in gross proceeds to support the advancement of SZN-8141 and SZN-8143," said Parker.
Clinical Development Timeline
With the funding secured, Surrozen is preparing to initiate the Phase 1b/2a DUET study. The company expects to dose the first patient in this trial during the fourth quarter of 2026. Following the initiation of the study, management anticipates the release of initial data in the second half of 2027.
Market Position
Surrozen Inc (SRZN) shares were trading at $25.22 as of October 8, 2026. The company focuses on using its Wnt-pathway platform to develop therapeutic candidates for eye, liver, and intestine diseases. The capital raised from the private placement is earmarked to support the ongoing advancement of the SZN-8141 program and its sibling candidate, SZN-8143.
