Standard Life reported a larger-than-expected rise in annual profit for 2025, contrasting against a wider statutory loss driven by hedging-related accounting charges and investor caution that sent shares down 3.2%.
"We think this (pension-risk transfers) will come through in the form of 40 to 60 billion pounds of pension risk transfers a year, although 2025 was actually a slow year," said Nicolaos Nicandrou, Finance Chief, Standard Life, in a statement regarding the market.
Statutory Losses Versus Operating Profit
For the full year 2025, according to an Investing.com report, Standard Life recorded a statutory loss after tax of £394 million. While significant, this marked a sharp narrowing from the £1.08 billion loss recorded a year earlier.
The underlying financial performance showed strength despite the bottom-line loss. Adjusted operating profit rose by 15%, supported by the company's core pensions and savings businesses.
The Impact of Hedging Charges
The statutory loss was heavily impacted by £604 million in hedging-related accounting charges. These non-operating items overwhelmed the operational gains achieved during the period, highlighting the discrepancy between underlying business earnings and statutory accounting figures.
Hedging costs often fluctuate based on market movements, creating accounting discrepancies that do not directly reflect cash generation from insurance and retirement operations.
Bulk Annuity Market Slowdown and Book Value
Investor caution following the results was further compounded by a significant drop in book value and concerns over a slowdown in the bulk annuity market, according to a Reuters report. Pension-risk transfers represent a key growth engine for UK insurers, though activity levels varied across the sector during the 2025 reporting period.
