Slovenia Clears Tesla FSD Ahead of October EU Vote

Slovenia has become the sixth European country to approve Tesla's Full Self-Driving driver-assistance system, clearing the software for use on domestic roads ahead of a potential European Union-wide approval vote as early as October.

"FSD Supervised now approved in Slovenia. Rollout will begin soon," Tesla wrote in a post on X on Monday that was reposted by Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk.

Slovenia’s Energy and Infrastructure Minister Jernej Vrtovec reposted the announcement with the words "Developing Slovenia." The approval marks another milestone for the electric vehicle manufacturer as it pursues regulatory clearance across the continent for its driver-assistance technology, which requires drivers to maintain continuous attention while the car controls steering, braking, and acceleration.

Timeline of European Approvals

Tesla's regulatory progress in Europe has advanced country by country ahead of a bloc-wide decision. The Netherlands made history in early April by provisionally approving the software on Dutch roads, establishing a precedent for other member states.

Following the Dutch decision, additional nations have evaluated and cleared the system. The addition of Slovenia brings the total count of European countries approving the software to six, building momentum for the anticipated European Union regulatory vote.

Upcoming EU Vote and Testing Data

Tesla indicated last week that an EU-wide approval vote could take place as soon as October 6. The timeline was shared alongside a publicly released dataset compiled from the company's European and North American testing programs.

The push for continent-wide clearance has faced skepticism from some national regulators. France raised specific safety issues regarding the system in July, signaling potential resistance to a rapid rollout.

Diplomatic and corporate engagement has shifted that stance. France's transport minister stated last week that the country had begun testing two FSD-equipped vehicles following what was described as a "constructive exchange" with Musk.

What Is at Stake for Tesla

Securing bloc-wide regulatory approval would allow Tesla to deploy its supervised autonomous driving software across all 27 European Union member states without requiring individual national negotiations. For the company, expanding the software's operational footprint represents a critical step in scaling its autonomous driving services outside North America amid increased competition in the electric vehicle sector.
