Shell has raised its third-quarter integrated gas production forecast to 740,000 to 780,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, up from its prior guidance of 570,000 to 630,000 boepd, alongside a projected surge in refining margins ahead of its October 29 earnings release.

The upward revision contrasts with softer performance expected in the energy giant's chemicals division, illustrating a mixed operational picture as the company prepares to report full quarterly results.

Production Growth and Acquisitions

The upgraded gas output forecast follows second-quarter production of 631,000 boepd, according to an Investing.com report. That prior period's volume was partly supported by the integration of ARC Resources assets, which expanded Shell's operating footprint in North American natural gas plays.

Integrated gas projects typically require substantial capital outlays and complex infrastructure development, making production consistency a key metric for equity analysts tracking cash generation. The higher volume expectations signal that recent portfolio additions are ramping up ahead of schedule.

Refining Versus Chemicals Margins

Operational headwinds and tailwinds are diverging across Shell's downstream divisions for the quarter ending September 30.

  • Refining margins: Shell forecast an indicative refining margin of $42 a barrel for the third quarter, jumping sharply from $24 a barrel in the second quarter.
  • Chemicals margins: The indicative chemicals margin is expected to decline to $208 a tonne, down from $270 a tonne in the previous period.

What Is at Stake for Earnings

The diverging margin trends and production updates precede Shell's scheduled full financial results announcement on October 29. While stronger refining profitability and higher gas output provide positive catalysts, investors will be monitoring cash outflows and the lingering drag from the chemicals sector to gauge overall free cash flow generation for the period.
