JPMorgan upgraded Afya Ltd. (NASDAQ: AFYA) to Overweight from Neutral while lowering its price target to $19.00 from $21.00, citing anticipated merger synergies and naming the firm a top pick across Latin American education.
Valuation and Synergy Projections
The upgrade rests heavily on the financial impact of the company's corporate consolidation. According to an Investing.com report, the merger is expected to yield R$1.8 billion in synergies and establish a larger higher education enterprise with approximately $16 million in average daily trading volume.
Following the combination, the unified entity will derive 65% of its EBITDA from medical schools and IBMEC. Analysts point to this segment mix as a driver of steady free cash flow alongside a minimum 50% payout ratio.
Understanding Free Cash Flow Yield and P/E Ratios
Free cash flow (FCF) yield is a financial solvency ratio that compares a company's free cash flow per share to its current share price, showing how much cash a business is generating relative to its market valuation. In equity analysis, a higher FCF yield often signals that a stock is attractively priced or capable of supporting shareholder returns.
Afya trades at a 15.1% free cash flow yield projected for 2027, positioning it favorably against regional peers such as Cogna at 14.7% and Anima at 11.7%. The company exhibits a 23% free cash flow yield based on the last twelve months, paired with a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 8.
Revenue Growth and Shareholder Returns
The equity adjustment follows financial results released for the second quarter and first half of the year. Afya reported a 6% increase in Q2 2026 revenue, reaching BRL 972 million.
For the first six months of the period, H1 revenue rose 7% to total BRL 1,985 million. Bolstered by these cash flows, the company returned BRL 448 million to shareholders through a combination of dividend distributions and share repurchases during the first half of the year.
