Rocket Lab has released its IMM Apex solar cell in production, eliminating germanium substrates to deliver a 31.5% conversion efficiency and a 40% reduction in cell mass for satellite applications, according to an Investing.com report.
The production release arrives as the aerospace sector navigates shortages of semiconductor materials, offering satellite manufacturers a drop-in replacement that requires no structural retooling of existing power systems.
"IMM Apex delivers exceptional performance while addressing real-world challenges like rising material costs and supply chain constraints," said Brad Clevenger, President of Rocket Lab USA.
Specifications and System Integration
The newly released IMM Apex solar cell achieves a beginning-of-life solar conversion efficiency of 31.5%. By shifting away from conventional multi-junction designs built on germanium wafers, the product reduces individual cell mass by 40%.
Lower mass directly impacts the economics of satellite deployment by decreasing launch payload weight or freeing up mass margins for additional onboard instrumentation. The component is available immediately as a drop-in replacement, allowing operators to integrate the technology into current spacecraft buses without modifying manufacturing lines.
Market Performance and Valuation
These product developments coincide with upward movement for the company's equity in public markets. Rocket Lab Corp (RKLB) closed at $65.87, marking a 2.51% increase from its previous close of $64.26, as of September 8, 2026, according to Finnhub market data.
The broader aerospace supply chain has faced pressure regarding germanium availability due to export controls and limited mining output. By removing the material from its solar manufacturing process, Rocket Lab secures an independent supply path for its space systems division as commercial and government constellation operators scale up deployment schedules.
