RBC Capital has initiated coverage on Kraken Robotics (TSX: PNG) with an 'Outperform' rating and a Cdn$6.00 price target. The firm highlights the company's evolution into an undersea technology provider. This outlook follows Kraken’s acquisition of the UK-based Covelya Group, which analysts view as a foundational shift for the business.
"The acquisition of Covelya Group represents a step-change that transforms Kraken into a full-subsystem undersea technology provider," according to an RBC Capital research note.
Strategic Expansion via Covelya
The integration of Covelya Group, finalized on July 2, 2026, is central to the firm's thesis. By moving beyond a sensor-focused business model, Kraken aims to capture a larger share of the maritime defense and survey market by offering integrated subsystems.
RBC Capital has assigned a 'Speculative Risk' designation to the stock. This classification reflects the challenges of integrating an acquisition and the volatility associated with smaller-cap technology firms in the defense and subsea sectors.
Financial Performance and Market Expectations
The initiation follows the company's second-quarter financial results for 2026. Kraken reported quarterly revenue of Cdn$27.32 million, which fell short of the Cdn$27.71 million consensus estimate.
Investor Considerations
The transition to a full-subsystem provider is a capital-intensive strategy requiring successful execution to realize projected synergies. For investors, the Cdn$6.00 price target serves as a benchmark for the company’s ability to leverage its expanded product portfolio to secure larger government and commercial contracts. As Kraken scales its operations, the market will monitor whether the increased complexity of its business model impacts operating margins or accelerates revenue growth.
