RBC Capital downgraded Owens Corning (NYSE:OC) to Sector Perform from Outperform, slashing its price target to $127 from $172 as persistent roofing sector weakness and a soft storm season weigh on the building materials manufacturer.
Earnings Estimate Revisions
Alongside the rating change, RBC Capital analysts lowered their forward financial projections for the company. The firm reduced its 2026 earnings per share estimate for Owens Corning to $9.54 from $10.23, and made a steeper cut to its 2027 estimate, bringing it down to $10.16 from $12.20.
Channel checks indicate that third-quarter residential shingle sell-in volumes avoided severe contraction primarily because manufacturers turned to discounting. This tactical price relief helped curb aggressive distribution de-stocking across the supply chain during the period.
Q4 De-Stocking and Cost Pressures
However, the research note warned that the temporary boost in third-quarter volumes trades off against fourth-quarter results. Analysts expect Q4 to face a renewed round of de-stocking, additional downside estimate risks, and negative carryover extending into the first half of 2027 following a particularly muted storm season.
Compounding these volume and demand headwinds is a deteriorating cost backdrop. Rising prices for key raw materials, specifically oil and asphalt, are projected to negatively skew Owens Corning's price-cost dynamics moving forward.
Industry Capacity and Market Context
Looking further ahead, the downgrade highlights potential longer-term headwinds from projected 2027 industry capacity ramps. As new production capability comes online across the roofing sector while demand remains constrained by a soft storm season, pricing power could face additional pressure.
For investors monitoring the materials sector, the downward revisions underscore the vulnerability of building products suppliers to shifts in seasonal weather patterns and raw material inflation. Owens Corning's ability to maintain margin stability amidst rising asphalt costs and shifting distribution inventories will remain a primary focus for market participants through upcoming quarters.
