Polestar reported a 1% year-over-year increase in estimated third-quarter retail sales to 14,371 vehicles, alongside the start of customer deliveries for the Polestar 5 [according to a press release from Polestar Investor Relations]. The modest top-line growth highlights the EV maker's performance amid shifting regional demand and regulatory headwinds in North America.

"We delivered our best third quarter despite increasingly challenging market conditions. The start of Polestar 5 customer deliveries marks an important milestone for the company, while the new Polestar 4 SUV broadens our product portfolio and extends our reach to new customer groups entering the D-SUV segment, the largest and most dynamic segment in the European premium EV market," said Michael Lohscheller, Polestar CEO, in a statement regarding the results.

Nine-Month Totals and Regional Divergence

For the first nine months of the year, Polestar's retail sales reached 44,790 vehicles, representing a 0.6% increase compared to 44,511 vehicles during the same period in the prior year.

The aggregate figures mask a distinct regional divergence driven by regulatory developments. Excluding the U.S. business, third-quarter retail sales fell 8% to 12,211 vehicles down from 13,256 vehicles a year earlier. For the nine-month period, international sales excluding the U.S. declined 0.5% to 40,773 vehicles from 40,968 vehicles.

Regulatory Impact on U.S. Reporting

In addition to total consolidated retail sales volumes, Polestar has begun presenting retail sales volumes excluding the U.S. separately. This structural reporting change follows regulatory decisions by U.S. authorities concerning the Connected Vehicle Rule, which impacts vehicle software, connectivity components, and market access for foreign-assembled connected cars.

Model Rollouts and Portfolio Expansion

The sales update coincides with the commercial rollout of new vehicle lines designed to capture broader segments of the premium electric vehicle market. Alongside the commencement of customer handovers for the Polestar 5 performance sedan, the company is ramping up distribution of the Polestar 4 SUV to target buyers in Europe's D-SUV segment.
