Otis Worldwide Corporation announced that Chair, Chief Executive Officer, and President Judith F. Marks will retire by mid-2027, prompting a board-led search for a successor as the elevator manufacturer approaches its seventh year as a standalone public company.

The transition will become effective on the earlier of her successor's start date, which is anticipated in the first half of 2027, or July 31, 2027, according to an 8-K filing with the SEC.

"It has been a distinct honor to serve as the CEO of Otis Worldwide Corporation," Marks said in a statement reported by Investing.com. "Through the continuing execution of our value-creation strategy, Otis is well positioned to drive growth through an enhanced focus on the service and modernization needs of our customers around the world."

Succession Committee and Advisor Terms

To manage the handover, the Otis Board of Directors has initiated an executive search considering both internal and external candidates. The search is overseen by a dedicated succession committee chaired by Christopher J. Kearney and aided by executive recruiting firm Spencer Stuart.

Should Marks step down before July 31, 2027, the SEC filing outlines a Transition Agreement allowing her to serve as a non-employee senior advisor through that date. Under these terms, her equity awards will continue to vest, and she remains eligible for her 2026 annual bonus based on actual performance metrics.

"Judy has played a central role in re-creating Otis as a standalone company," Kearney stated regarding the transition plan.

Performance Milestones Since 2020 Spin-Off

Marks has led Otis since its separation from United Technologies Corporation in April 2020. During her tenure heading the independent entity, the company has generated returns for equity holders through operational focus and capital allocation.

According to corporate filings, the manufacturer has accomplished several financial and operational milestones since the 2020 spin-off:

  • Returned approximately $8.4 billion of capital to shareholders, comprising $3.4 billion in dividends and $5 billion in share buybacks.
  • Delivered a 77% total shareholder return.
  • Expanded its global service portfolio by roughly 25% to encompass approximately 2.5 million elevator and escalator units worldwide.

What Is at Stake for the Elevator Industry

As urbanization drives demand for vertical transportation, equipment maintenance and digital modernization represent the primary profit drivers for legacy elevator manufacturers. The incoming chief executive will inherit a maintenance portfolio spanning millions of units, where recurring service agreements insulate equipment makers from the cyclical volatility of new equipment installations.
