ORIC Pharmaceuticals has entered a partnership with Cancer Research UK to advance the development of ORIC-259, a CIP2A-targeted therapy. Under the agreement, Cancer Research UK’s Centre for Drug Development will fund, sponsor, and execute the clinical studies for the program. This arrangement allows ORIC to preserve internal capital for its late-stage pipeline.
"Cancer Research UK’s proven expertise and capabilities in developing innovative cancer therapies make it an ideal partner for the program, while this structure allows us to remain disciplined in allocating our internal resources to our late-stage clinical pipeline," said Lori Friedman, chief scientific officer at ORIC.
How the Partnership Structures Risk
The agreement covers the design and execution of CTA-enabling studies and Phase 1/2 clinical trials. By offloading these early-stage development costs to the non-profit organization, ORIC reduces the cash-burn rate associated with early clinical development.
ORIC retains a strategic option to reacquire the rights to ORIC-259 after the Phase 1/2 data is generated. In exchange, Cancer Research UK is eligible for future milestone payments and royalties if the drug advances toward commercialization. This model allows the biotech firm to maintain a pipeline presence in early-stage assets without the full burden of trial funding during the initial phase of drug development.
Market Context and Financial Trends
The partnership arrives as ORIC Pharmaceuticals (ORIC) focuses on balancing its research investments. As of October 9, 2026, the company’s stock closed at $11.99.
Recent financial disclosures show that the company has faced insider selling activity. According to data from GuruFocus, ORIC has seen $3.4 million in insider selling over the past 12 months, with no recorded insider purchases during that same period.
The Role of CIP2A Targeting
ORIC-259 is designed to target CIP2A, a protein often overexpressed in various cancers that contributes to tumor growth and resistance to existing therapies. By focusing on this mechanism, the collaboration aims to address a specific area of oncology. The agreement with Cancer Research UK enables the program to proceed through early clinical milestones under an experienced research infrastructure, providing a testing ground for the therapy's efficacy before ORIC commits further capital to late-stage development.
