The Nasdaq 100 index is pinned inside a tight consolidation range below 29,750 resistance, accompanied by an ultra-weak ADX reading of 13.5 that signals market indecision and heightened whipsaw risks.

The three-month rectangular trading pattern between 29,100 and 29,600 has formed alongside declining trading volume, pointing to a period of consolidation before a directional breakout.

"The Nasdaq 100 has spent three months inside a rectangle consolidation pattern between 29,100 and 29,600, accompanied by declining volume and an ADX trend strength indicator at 13.5," according to an Investing.com report.

Technical Mechanics of the ADX Indicator and Rectangle Patterns

The Average Directional Index (ADX) measures trend strength on a scale from 0 to 100, regardless of whether prices are moving upward or downward. Readings below 20 typically indicate a weak or non-existent trend, suggesting that the market is range-bound rather than directional.

When a low ADX reading coincides with a rectangular consolidation pattern, market technicians view the setup as a coiled spring. Traders monitor rectangle boundaries because extended sideways movement often precedes high-volume breakouts, though low-trend environments also increase the risk of false breakouts and whipsaws.

Nasdaq Inc. Market Performance

Alongside the index's technical consolidation, shares of exchange operator Nasdaq Inc. (NASDAQ: NDAQ) traded downward during the recent session.

According to Finnhub market data, Nasdaq Inc. closed at $88.76 on September 16, 2026, marking a 0.53% decline from its previous close of $89.23.

Market Stakes and Breakout Triggers

Market participants tracking major equity benchmarks are watching the 29,750 resistance ceiling for confirmation of a new directional move. A decisive volume-backed breakout or breakdown from the established 29,100 to 29,750 range would resolve the current low-momentum stalemate.
