Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment is partnering with private equity firm Centurium Capital to make a $1 billion strategic minority investment in Chinese coffee chain Luckin Coffee, expanding Gulf capital deployment into Asian consumer brands. The transaction aligns state-backed Middle Eastern capital with Centurium, the controlling shareholder of the Beijing-based coffee operator.
"Mubadala and Centurium-related entities will jointly report beneficial ownership of about 22.1% of Luckin on an as-converted basis," according to an Investing.com report.
Board Rights and SEC Filing Details
Under the terms disclosed in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing, the agreement grants Mubadala's investment vehicle the right to nominate a director to Luckin's board once it holds at least 5% of the company on an as-converted basis. The joint filing highlights a formalized governance structure between the incoming Abu Dhabi fund and Centurium Capital as they oversee the retailer's ongoing expansion.
Luckin operates on a large retail scale, reporting more than 36,000 stores globally as of June 30, alongside nearly 500 million cumulative transaction customers. Financially, the company's second-quarter revenue rose about 29% year over year to roughly 15.9 billion yuan, while operating profit increased about 22% to 2.1 billion yuan.
Gulf Sovereign Wealth in China
The $1 billion deployment fits into a broader strategy of Middle Eastern capital flowing into Chinese markets. According to a Semafor report, Mubadala has invested more than $20 billion in China across over 100 deals since 2015. Despite this growing exposure, the United States still accounts for 44% of Mubadala's total assets under management, which stand at $385 billion.
For Luckin Coffee, the injection of capital arrives years after the company was delisted from the Nasdaq exchange following an accounting scandal. The stock trades over the counter in the United States under the ticker LKNCY, closing at $33.55 on September 8.
