Moderna Inc. shares climbed 4.5% to $236.50 as of October 15, 2026, driven by a surge in call options and growing anticipation for upcoming melanoma vaccine data.
The biotechnology firm's recent inclusion in the Nasdaq-100 index has triggered mandatory buying from passive index-tracking funds, amplifying upward momentum alongside heightened speculative interest in the derivatives market.
Options Volume and Volatility Metrics
Trading activity in Moderna options accelerated sharply during the session. An options-flow snapshot recorded 245,404 total contracts traded, featuring a distinctly bullish tilt.
Call options accounted for 156,615 of the contracts, while puts totaled 88,789, creating a roughly 64% to 36% call-heavy split. Concurrently, 3-month implied volatility climbed to 89.56%, reflecting heightened market expectations for significant price swings ahead of clinical data disclosures.
Index Inclusion and Passive Fund Flows
Moderna officially joined the Nasdaq-100 index on October 9, 2026, replacing Warner Bros. Discovery. Index reconstitution forces exchange-traded funds and institutional portfolios that benchmark against the Nasdaq-100 to adjust their holdings, creating substantial structural demand for newly admitted equities.
This rebalancing effect often provides a temporary liquidity and valuation boost, setting the stage for increased retail and institutional options participation.
Upcoming Melanoma Vaccine Data Catalyst
Beyond index mechanics, investor focus centers on the company's oncology pipeline. Detailed Phase 3 data for intismeran autogene, a personalized cancer vaccine developed in partnership with Merck, is scheduled for presentation at an upcoming Presidential Symposium on October 24.
This dual catalyst of structural index demand and binary clinical trial outcomes underpins the current expansion in derivatives trading volume and equity gains.
