Mizuho has downgraded The Hartford Financial Services Group (HIG) from 'Outperform' to 'Neutral' because of mounting underwriting pressures and a deceleration in insurance pricing. The firm also lowered its price target for the stock to $154 from $163.
The downgrade reflects analyst caution regarding the commercial insurance sector's ability to maintain historical pricing momentum. This shift in sentiment follows a move in July 2026, when Piper Sandler downgraded Hartford to 'Neutral' after observing that commercial insurance pricing had begun to decelerate across the industry for the first time since 2017.
Strategic Shifts and Asset Divestiture
Beyond market-wide pricing headwinds, the company is navigating a restructuring of its business model. Hartford Financial has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its non-core Hartford Funds business to Wellington Management for approximately $1.9 billion.
This transaction, expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, is a component of the company's effort to streamline its operations. By divesting the asset management arm, Hartford aims to focus on its core property and casualty insurance underwriting, a segment facing the pricing challenges highlighted by Mizuho's latest analysis.
Industry Pricing Trends
The insurance industry has experienced a long cycle of rate increases, but recent data suggests that the peak of this pricing cycle may have passed. As commercial pricing growth slows, analysts are scrutinizing the underwriting margins of major insurers like Hartford to determine if they can offset lower premiums with operational efficiency or volume growth.
For investors, the transition from 'Outperform' to 'Neutral' signals a change in expectation regarding the stock's near-term growth potential. The move by Mizuho aligns with the consensus among analysts who are recalibrating their outlooks in response to the competitive environment and the cooling pricing trends that have characterized the property and casualty sector throughout the latter half of 2026.
