Micron Technology faces potential production disruptions at its Taiwan manufacturing hub after the Taoyuan union voted to authorize a strike. The move follows a breakdown in labor-management negotiations regarding profit-sharing structures, which creates uncertainty for the company’s DRAM and High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) output.

In a vote concluded this week, the union secured strike authorization with 88.3% support, according to a report from TrendForce. Out of 2,258 registered members, 1,994 voted in favor of the measure.

"We will continue to work through the established dialogue and mediation processes," said Lin Che-jui, chairman of the Taoyuan union, in a statement regarding the ongoing labor-management negotiations.

Profit-Sharing and Operational Risks

The union is demanding a formalized profit-sharing system tied to 15% of Micron’s operating profit. Labor representatives have cited a disparity between the bonuses awarded to rank-and-file employees and those provided to executive leadership as the primary driver for the dispute.

Micron’s Taoyuan facility is a center of its global operations, focusing primarily on DRAM production. Analysts note that any work stoppage could impact the plant's operational stability. Because modern semiconductor fabrication requires constant oversight, a strike could disrupt essential equipment maintenance and process monitoring, leading to reduced production yields and supply chain bottlenecks for HBM, a component in AI-focused hardware.

Parallel Negotiations in Taichung

The labor pressure extends to the Taichung plant. The union at Micron’s Taichung facility is engaged in its own series of labor-management discussions. According to TrendForce, the Taichung union has a second mediation session scheduled for October 22. If those talks fail to produce an agreement, the Taichung workers could move to initiate their own strike authorization vote, widening the scope of the labor conflict.

What Is at Stake for Micron

For Micron, the timing of these negotiations is sensitive. As the company scales production of advanced memory chips to meet global demand, any interruption in its Taiwan-based manufacturing capacity would affect the broader technology sector. The company maintains that it is working to resolve these grievances through legal mediation frameworks, though the support for the strike authorization signals a hardening of the union's stance.
