Lacoste has replaced CEO Eric Vallat after just over a year in the role. This represents a quick leadership transition for the apparel brand. Former leader Thierry Guibert, who currently serves as head of parent company Maus Frères, will return to lead the firm.

Guibert previously managed Lacoste for over a decade. He oversaw a period of brand repositioning. His return to the CEO role occurs as the company seeks to maintain continuity in its commercial objectives.

"The brand will pursue its strategy of premiumization supported by a solid position and robust fundamentals," a Lacoste spokesperson said in a statement regarding the leadership change.

Context of the Leadership Shift

Although Vallat left suddenly, sources familiar with the matter indicated that the performance of the unlisted brand was not the primary driver behind the exit. The transition focuses on aligning executive leadership with the strategic direction set by Maus Frères, the Swiss group that owns the Lacoste brand.

Lacoste is navigating a multi-year growth plan to scale its global footprint. The company has set a goal to reach annual sales of €4 billion by the 2028-2030 period.

Strategic Continuity and Premiumization

Under Guibert's previous tenure, Lacoste shifted its focus toward premiumization. This strategy involves the elevation of the brand's aesthetic, price points, and retail presence to compete with luxury fashion houses. This move away from mass-market distribution was central to the brand's financial recovery in the late 2010s.

As Guibert resumes his oversight of the brand while maintaining his responsibilities at Maus Frères, the company is expected to continue its focus on these core pillars. Retail companies often bring back a familiar figure to minimize disruption during periods of strategic implementation, especially when a company aims for specific revenue milestones in a competitive sector.
