Mexico's annual inflation rate accelerated to 3.45% in September from 3.26% in August, remaining within the central bank's target range despite picking up pace.
According to an Investing.com report, consumer prices rose 3.45% in the year through September, marking an increase from the prior month's 3.26% annual reading. The latest consumer price index figures show that inflationary pressures ticked upward heading into the fourth quarter, though the annual rate remained contained relative to past cycles.
Monthly Consumer Price Trends
On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased 0.42% in September, matching economist expectations and accelerating from the 0.20% rise recorded in August. Meanwhile, the core consumer price index, which strips out volatile energy and agricultural items, climbed 0.20% during September and advanced 3.75% on an annual basis.
Despite the month-over-month acceleration, the headline annual figure came in slightly below the 3.47% increase forecast by economists surveyed in a median poll.
Central Bank Target and Monetary Policy
Both the headline and core annual inflation rates remained within Mexico's central bank target range of 3%, plus or minus one percentage point. This tolerance band guides monetary policy decisions by Banco de México as policymakers weigh domestic price stability against broader economic growth.
The maintenance of inflation within the established target corridor provides monetary authorities room to evaluate economic conditions without immediate pressure for aggressive policy tightening, even as month-over-month price gains pick up momentum.
