Meta Platforms is preparing to launch a new line of camera-free smart glasses code-named Luna as early as October, according to a Reuters report. The hardware rollout aims to address mounting privacy scrutiny surrounding the recording capabilities of its existing smart eyewear lineup.
The upcoming release could see a formal unveiling during the company's annual Connect developer conference, marking a strategic pivot toward audio-first wearables designed for environments where recording devices face strict bans or user hesitation.
Hardware Design and Audio Features
The Luna smart glasses will be offered in two distinct frames, Clubmaster and Burbank, according to an Engadget report. Rather than featuring visual capture hardware, the device is engineered around a comprehensive acoustic setup.
The hardware includes six built-in microphones alongside directional speakers pointed toward the user's ears. Users will also be able to interact with Meta AI and Muse via a dedicated side button built into the frame.
Navigating Regulatory and Privacy Headwinds
The decision to omit cameras addresses continuous privacy challenges that have accompanied the commercial success of Meta's earlier collaborative eyewear with Ray-Ban. Public venues, schools, and workplaces have increasingly restricted camera-enabled glasses over unauthorized recording concerns.
By stripping out the camera sensor while retaining conversational AI capabilities, Meta is targeting consumers who want hands-free digital assistance without triggering surveillance concerns in sensitive public or private spaces.
Market Position and Recent Trading
These product development plans arrive as Meta's equity trades against a backdrop of broader technology sector fluctuations. In the public markets, META PLATFORMS INC-CLASS A closed at $665.75, down 2.43% on September 18, 2026, according to Finnhub market data.
The upcoming October shipment window places the new audio-centric frames squarely in the competitive retail period ahead of the year-end holiday shopping season, testing whether consumers will embrace smart glasses driven entirely by voice and audio interactions.
