Kinetik Holdings Inc. shares surged 5% in after-hours trading Wednesday following reports from Bloomberg News that the energy pipeline operator is exploring strategic options, including a potential sale. The Blackstone Inc.-backed company is currently working with advisers to prepare for a formal sale process that could launch within weeks.

Prior to the after-hours move, Kinetik closed regular trading down 0.8% at $54.55. That close gave the Permian Basin-focused infrastructure firm a market capitalization of approximately $8.9 billion, with its equity having climbed 30% over the preceding year.

Earlier Approaches and Permian Infrastructure

The exploration of a sale follows earlier acquisition interest from competitors in the midstream sector. According to market reports detailing the surge, Western Midstream Partners made an approach earlier in 2026 that prompted Kinetik to begin gauging broader buyer interest.

That initial overture highlighted the strategic value of Kinetik's extensive asset footprint. The company operates a roughly 4,600-mile pipeline and gathering network spanning the Permian Basin in West Texas and New Mexico down to the U.S. Gulf Coast, moving crude oil, natural gas, and produced water for upstream producers.

Timeline and Market Uncertainty

While preparations for an auction or targeted sale are underway with financial advisers, sources emphasize that no final decisions have been finalized. Kinetik could ultimately choose to remain independent if incoming bids fail to meet valuation expectations.

The potential transaction underscores ongoing consolidation across the North American midstream energy sector. Pipeline operators with prime Permian acreage and takeaway capacity continue to attract private equity and strategic buyers seeking scale amid steady regional production volumes.
