JPMorgan Chase has terminated its prime brokerage lending relationship with Leopold Aschenbrenner’s AI-focused hedge fund, Situational Awareness, following record-setting portfolio losses during a July market downturn, according to an Investing.com report.
During the sharp July sell-off across technology equities, Situational Awareness experienced what reports indicate was the largest single-dollar loss in hedge fund industry history, wiping out 67% of its total assets. The severe drawdown triggered immediate risk-management reviews across major Wall Street institutions regarding leveraged exposure to concentrated artificial intelligence bets.
The Citadel Rescue and Banking Exodus
The fund averted a complete collapse by executing an emergency portfolio offload, transferring the bulk of its public market positions to Ken Griffin's Citadel. Despite the historic July contraction, that rescue transaction left the fund up 80% on the year as of the end of July.
Following the losses, top-tier financial institutions reassessed their exposure. Morgan Stanley declined to establish a banking relationship with the fund, and JPMorgan Chase ultimately cut off its prime brokerage credit facilities entirely. In response to the Wall Street pullback, Aschenbrenner shifted operations to boutique prime broker Clear Street.
How Flex Options Replace Traditional Leverage
To navigate the loss of prime brokerage leverage, the fund has restructured its trading strategies around alternative derivative mechanisms rather than traditional margin borrowing. Situational Awareness is now deploying customized flex options and fully paid derivatives.
Flexible exchange options, or flex options, are customized exchange-traded contracts that allow investors to tailor expiration dates, strike prices, and exercise styles. By utilizing pre-paid premiums on these contracts rather than leveraged margin accounts, the fund caps its potential downside exposure strictly to the upfront premium paid, eliminating margin-call risks associated with traditional bank lending.
Focus on Semiconductor and Infrastructure Plays
The fund's revised derivative strategy targets specific hardware and infrastructure providers central to the artificial intelligence boom. Current holdings and derivative structures focus on semiconductor manufacturers including Advanced Micro Devices, Intel, SK Hynix, and SanDisk, alongside AI cloud infrastructure provider CoreWeave.
The swift retreat by major Wall Street banks underscores a broader institutional risk recalibration toward highly concentrated thematic funds. As prime brokers tighten credit standards following historic single-month drawdowns, high-conviction AI funds are forced to absorb higher friction costs and pivot toward fully collateralized derivative structures to maintain market participation.
