IG Group shares plummeted up to 27.2% to their lowest level since April 2025 after the online trading platform projected a 14% fall in third-quarter revenue due to weaker-than-expected over-the-counter (OTC) retention. According to an Investing.com report, the sharp valuation correction highlights immediate pressures on the broker's core trading margins amid less supportive market conditions.
"Growth in first trades and active customers remained strong in Q3 2026. Lower Q3 revenue reflected reduced OTC revenue retention in less supportive market conditions," said Breon Corcoran, Chief Executive, IG Group, in a statement regarding the downgrade.
Q3 Revenue and OTC Metrics
For the third quarter of fiscal 2026, IG expects total revenue of approximately £240 million, representing a 14% decline compared to the same period a year earlier. Net trading revenue is forecasted at about £210 million, down from £249.5 million in the prior-year period.
The revenue contraction was driven primarily by a drop in OTC net trading revenue, which fell roughly 18% to £155 million. OTC revenue retention slipped to approximately 70% during the quarter, falling well below the roughly 80% average recorded since operational changes to IG's market-making activities were introduced in the second half of 2025.
Customer Growth and Restructuring Costs
Despite the revenue headwinds, retail engagement metrics showed underlying expansion. Organic first trades increased more than 25% year-on-year, and active customers rose by about 17%. Revenue from IG's Underdog business also more than doubled to approximately $105 million.
Alongside the trading updates, IG anticipates incurring about £30 million of non-recurring costs in fiscal 2026. These expenses stem from moving the company's corporate domicile to Jersey and ongoing restructuring following a new organizational model announced in July.
Market-Making Mechanisms and Financial Stakes
Over-the-counter derivatives platforms like IG act as market makers for retail traders, taking the opposing side of client positions and managing the resulting market exposure. When client trading patterns align against the broker or market volatility shifts abruptly, retention rates can fluctuate significantly depending on hedging efficacy and prevailing market conditions.
The combination of lower OTC retention rates and £30 million in corporate relocation and restructuring expenses highlights the operational challenges facing retail brokerage platforms as they navigate shifting market environments alongside structural business transformations.
