General Dynamics has named 25-year company veteran and current president Danny Deep to succeed long-serving chief executive officer Phebe Novakovic, with the transition scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027. Novakovic, who took the helm in 2013, will step down from her current role to become executive chairman, closing a 16-year tenure at the head of the defense contractor.
"We look forward to her continuing role with the company and to working together with Danny. We have every confidence that he will continue the outstanding leadership and legacy that Phebe has exemplified," said Laura Schumacher, the lead independent director on the board, according to Aviation Week.
Under Novakovic's leadership, General Dynamics expanded its portfolio across aerospace, combat systems, and marine systems, navigating fluctuating defense budgets and commercial aviation cycles. Her planned move to executive chairman ensures continued board-level oversight as the company hands operational control to Deep, who has spent a quarter-century rising through the organization's ranks.
"Phebe has been an extraordinary leader for General Dynamics, and I am grateful for the close partnership we've shared and the opportunity to continue working together in the future. I am profoundly honored to be selected as the next CEO of General Dynamics and humbled and deeply thankful for the board's confidence," said Danny Deep in a prepared statement.
Market Trading Data and Financial Valuation
Ahead of the leadership announcement, shares of General Dynamics Corp (GD) traded at $335.46, marking an increase of 1.26% from a previous close of $331.27, according to Finnhub market data as of October 12, 2026.
The defense giant continues to manage a substantial backlog of government and commercial orders, driven by sustained demand for armored vehicles, nuclear submarines, and Gulfstream business jets. The structured timeline gives institutional investors and federal procurement partners more than a year to price in the managerial shift before Deep assumes the chief executive responsibilities.
The Mechanics of Defense Sector Succession
Executive transitions in the aerospace and defense sector often require extended runway periods due to the long-cycle nature of military programs and classified government contracts. By announcing the succession plan well in advance and retaining Novakovic as executive chairman, General Dynamics aims to maintain stability across major Pentagon programs and international defense partnerships.
