Canada's Enbridge is expanding its U.S. liquids pipeline network by acquiring Blackstone-owned Tallgrass Energy's crude oil business for $2.55 billion in cash, alongside a planned executive leadership transition.
"Few leaders have shaped Enbridge as profoundly as Greg Ebel. Before becoming President and CEO, Greg played an integral role in the transformational merger of Spectra Energy and Enbridge," said Steve Williams, Board Chair, in a statement regarding the leadership change.
Asset Breakdown and Pipeline Capacity
The all-cash transaction encompasses several infrastructure assets previously held by private equity firm Blackstone. Specifically, the deal includes a 75% interest in the 1,050-mile Pony Express Pipeline, a 51% stake in the Powder River Gateway pipeline system, and 8.4 million barrels of storage distributed across nine crude terminals.
Along with operational pipeline and storage assets, Enbridge acquires the crude marketing business Stanchion Energy. The purchase incorporates the PXP2 growth project, a $300 million expansion initiative designed to boost the Pony Express pipeline's throughput capacity to approximately 515,000 barrels per day by late 2027, according to a Rigzone report.
Leadership Succession Plan
Concurrent with the multi-billion-dollar acquisition, Enbridge announced a corporate succession. Greg Ebel will retire from his positions as president and chief executive officer on December 31, concluding a tenure marked by major structural consolidation within North American energy transport.
Succeeding Ebel will be Michele Harradence, who steps into the role as Enbridge navigates its next phase of asset integration and network expansion. The incoming chief executive inherits a capital program that includes both the newly added PXP2 development and broader cross-border infrastructure commitments.
