Enbridge is expanding its U.S. liquids pipeline network by acquiring a majority stake in the Pony Express Pipeline and related crude assets from Blackstone-backed Tallgrass Energy for $2.55 billion in cash. The final cash purchase agreement surpasses early reports that initially estimated the transaction at approximately $2 billion as advanced talks progressed.
"Enbridge announced it will acquire Blackstone-owned Tallgrass Energy’s crude oil business for $2.55 billion in cash, expanding its U.S. liquids pipeline network by buying a majority stake in the Pony Express Pipeline and other assets," according to a report from 933 The Drive.
Pipeline Capacity and Asset Breakdown
The transaction centers on a 75% interest in the Pony Express Pipeline, a 1,050-mile, 1,690-kilometer crude system with a capacity of 460,000 barrels per day. The pipeline physically links production in the Rocky Mountains directly to the major crude oil storage hub in Cushing, Oklahoma.
In addition to the flagship pipeline, the finalized acquisition encompasses several key energy infrastructure holdings:
- A 51% equity stake in the Powder River Gateway pipeline system
- Nearly 8.4 million barrels of commercial storage capacity distributed across nine crude terminals
- The crude marketing business Stanchion Energy
Strategic Position in North American Energy
For Calgary-headquartered Enbridge, the purchase deepens its operational footprint across North American midstream corridors. By absorbing Tallgrass Energy's crude oil operations, the pipeline operator integrates vital takeaway capacity connecting Rocky Mountain production basins directly into mid-continent storage infrastructure, cementing its role in regional crude logistics.
