European Central Bank officials opted to withhold future policy guidance following a 25 basis point rate hike last month, choosing instead to preserve policy flexibility as inflation risks intensify from Middle East energy shocks. The decision lifts the central bank's key deposit facility to 2.5%, according to an Investing.com report.
"It was particularly important" to refrain from offering "any guidance regarding the future interest rate path and retain full discretion for all future meetings, based on data-dependence and informed by a comprehensive assessment," the ECB stated in its meeting minutes.
Upgraded Inflation Projections
The policy shift coincides with upward revisions to the central bank's medium-term price outlook. New ECB staff projections place headline inflation at 3.0% for the current year.
Looking further ahead, projections were increased for subsequent periods. Headline inflation is now estimated at 2.5% in 2027 and 2.1% in 2028, remaining above the central bank's 2% target.
Data-Dependent Approach Ahead of October Meeting
By dropping explicit forward guidance, Governing Council members aim to prevent market lock-in as geopolitical conflicts threaten European energy supply chains. Policymakers emphasized that upcoming decisions will rely entirely on incoming economic data rather than pre-committed pathways.
The central bank's next monetary policy decision is scheduled to be unveiled on October 29.
