D.R. Horton's board of directors authorized an additional $5.0 billion common stock repurchase program on September 15, 2026, replenishing capital return capacity after its prior authorization fell to approximately $53 million.
The homebuilder plans to deploy capital under the new mandate, projecting that total common stock repurchases for fiscal 2026 will reach at least $3.25 billion, according to a company announcement.
How the $5 Billion Program Is Structured
The authorization provides management with discretion to repurchase shares over time, as the board established no set expiration date for the mandate, according to the company's SEC EDGAR filing.
The new program refreshes the company's balance sheet capacity for equity retirement. Prior to the board's vote, D.R. Horton had approximately $53 million remaining under its existing stock repurchase authorization as of September 15, 2026, according to a regulatory filing.
Open-market share repurchases reduce total diluted shares outstanding, which concentrates per-share equity ownership and lifts earnings per share without altering net income. By running the program without a fixed expiration, corporate treasuries retain flexibility to pace repurchases according to operating cash flow cycles and prevailing share valuations.
Market Pricing and Trading Context
The authorization arrives amid equity fluctuations across the home construction sector. D.R. Horton Inc. shares traded around $138.02, down 1.68%, as of September 18, 2026, according to Finnhub market data.
The company's projected minimum deployment of $3.25 billion for fiscal 2026 indicates that management intends to utilize more than 60% of the newly authorized capital within the single fiscal year.
