Aurora Cannabis has completed an expansion of its Leuna, Germany facility, doubling its expected annual flower output as the company strengthens its position in the European medical market.
The multi-million-dollar investment at the newly renamed Aurora Horizon site secured an expanded European Union Good Manufacturing Practice license from the State Office for Social Affairs, Youth and Health of Saxony-Anhalt for the newly constructed production areas, according to an Investing.com report.
"The completion of our Leuna facility transformation is an important milestone for Aurora and reinforces our commitment to serving patients in our fastest-growing markets, including Germany, where we are proud to be a domestic manufacturer," said Alex Miller, EVP, Operations and Supply Chain at Aurora, in a statement regarding the project.
Regulatory Standards and Market Position
The facility expansion operates under stringent EU-GMP guidelines, which govern pharmaceutical-grade manufacturing across the European Union. Securing this certification for the newly built areas allows Aurora to distribute the scaled output directly to regulated medical channels.
Following the transformation, Aurora is positioned as one of only three domestic producers operating within Germany. This local manufacturing footprint enables the company to supply patients without relying solely on cross-border importation, reducing transit times and regulatory friction.
Strategic Growth in European Medical Cannabis
The Leuna site upgrade aligns with rising demand across Germany's medical cannabis sector, which has experienced increased patient access following recent legislative reforms. By doubling output at Aurora Horizon, the company aims to capture a larger share of the prescription market while maintaining compliance with regional health authorities.
