Currys posted a 7% jump in group like-for-like revenue for the 17 weeks ending August 29 and maintained its full-year guidance, even as its stock slipped in early trading. Despite the earnings beat, investors pushed shares down, highlighting how market expectations often outpace solid operational execution in European retail.
"We expect a materially positive share price reaction to this update given strong trading and reiterated guidance, and given shares have been weak into the print," Citi analysts said in a note cited by Investing.com.
Regional Sales and Seasonal Drivers
According to an Investing.com report, the 7% group like-for-like revenue increase was underpinned by strong regional performances. U.K. and Ireland sales grew 6%, while the Nordics division outperformed with a 9% rise during the 17-week period.
The U.K. and Ireland division's growth benefited by roughly 2 percentage points from the World Cup and summer heatwaves in an otherwise flat market. The electrical retailer also recorded double-digit growth across new categories and its business-to-business (B2B) operations.
Market Reaction and Share Price Performance
Despite the positive trading momentum, shares in the group fell 1.3% in early London trading by 07:16 GMT. The decline came even as the retailer confirmed it remains "comfortable with market consensus" and left its full-year earnings guidance unchanged.
Services Expansion and Balance Sheet Strength
Currys' recurring services revenue continued to expand across multiple metrics during the period. Flexpay adoption increased by 30 basis points year-on-year to reach 23.6%, while iD Mobile subscribers grew 16% to surpass 2.7 million users.
Financial positioning also showed stability through capital return programs and cash generation. Currys' £50 million share buyback is actively underway with £23 million completed to date, and the company expects its year-end net cash to finish well above its £100 million target.
What Is at Stake for Retailers
The trading update underscores the delicate balance consumer electronics retailers face in navigating seasonal demand spikes against broader macroeconomic pressures. By pairing traditional store and online sales with subscription-like services such as mobile plans and flexible credit, Currys aims to smooth out the cyclicality inherent in hardware retail.
