Bitcoin climbed as high as $81,702 on Sept. 18, marking its first move above $80,000 since Sept. 7 after trading near $76,400 a day earlier, as a massive wave of leveraged short liquidations overpowered macroeconomic rate pressures and regulatory setbacks in Washington, according to an Investing.com report. The sudden upward movement demonstrated how derivatives positioning can temporarily decouple digital asset prices from broader tightening cycles and legislative roadblocks.
The Mechanics of a Crypto Short Squeeze
A short squeeze occurs when heavily leveraged bearish traders are forced to buy back assets to cover margin calls as prices rise, creating a compounding upward spiral. Within just one hour, roughly $192 million of leveraged crypto positions were liquidated, with over $183 million consisting of short bets, according to the Investing.com report. Bitcoin shorts alone accounted for about $119 million of those forced liquidations.
This aggressive unwinding of short positions was supported by steady spot-market accumulation. U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded about $159 million of net inflows on Sept. 17, providing fresh underlying demand that helped absorb incoming selling pressure.
Macro Rate Hikes and Global Central Bank Pressures
The rally unfolded against a backdrop of tighter global monetary policy. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points, while the Bank of Japan followed with a quarter-point increase to 1.25%, its highest policy rate in 31 years.
Higher interest rates typically increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like Bitcoin, making fixed-income instruments more attractive to institutional capital. However, the sheer velocity of the derivative-driven short liquidation overwhelmed the bearish macro signals.
Legislative Setbacks and SEC Innovations
Regulatory headwinds also tested market sentiment during the session. Legislative uncertainty was underscored after the U.S. Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act, a bill intended to establish comprehensive federal oversight for digital assets.
At the same time, the Securities and Exchange Commission introduced a new innovation exemption. This regulatory pathway allows qualifying platforms a five-year route to offer onchain trading in certain tokenized stocks without registering as traditional securities exchanges.
