CME Group has withdrawn its regulatory filing to launch a 24-hour, 10-barrel crude oil futures contract, shelving the product after market participants raised concerns about continuous energy trading risks.
The exchange operator stepped back from the planned offering to prevent potential systemic vulnerabilities, marking a retreat from efforts to counter competing round-the-clock venues.
"We created and planned to launch a 10-Barrel oil contract to provide a transparent, regulated alternative to the 24/7 oil contracts that other venues have introduced in the marketplace," said CME Group Chairman and Chief Executive Terry Duffy in a statement.
Industry Concerns Over Continuous Energy Trading
The proposed contract was designed to feature micro-sized lots and round-the-clock availability, targeting retail and institutional participants seeking smaller exposures than standard 1,000-barrel WTI contracts.
However, pushback from clearing firms, traders, and risk managers centered on the operational hurdles of maintaining margin requirements and managing liquidity without traditional market closes.
"Key constituents are concerned that introducing 24/7 trading in energy without further due diligence could create unintended consequences, possibly introducing additional risk in the marketplace," Duffy said.
Market Valuation and Share Price Performance
CME Group Inc shares traded at $276.44, representing a 2.28% increase from its previous close of $270.27, according to Finnhub market data as of October 8, 2026.
The exchange's decision leaves standard electronic trading hours governing major global benchmarks like West Texas Intermediate and Brent, while alternative platforms continue to experiment with extended-hours crypto and commodity perpetual products.
