Eli Lilly's oral obesity treatment, Foundayo, has captured over 30% of new U.S. patients, rapidly cutting into the early market lead established by competitor Novo Nordisk and its Wegovy pill.
The milestone marks a shift in the competitive sector for weight-loss medications, as pharmaceutical companies race to capture share in an expanding market projected to exceed $100 billion annually by 2030, according to analyst projections cited by Yahoo Finance.
"When the market expands significantly through generic, share declines. But the overall volume, absolute volume, is continuing to grow for Mounjaro in those markets," said Ilya Yuffa, Lilly Executive Vice President, regarding generic competition in India and Canada.
Shifting Dynamics in the Oral GLP-1 Market
The 30% threshold achieved by Foundayo represents a challenge to Novo Nordisk's initial dominance in the oral category. In August, Novo Nordisk CEO Mike Doustdar estimated that the Wegovy pill held approximately 90% of the U.S. oral obesity market.
At the Morgan Stanley healthcare conference, Ilya Yuffa provided additional metrics regarding patient acquisition, noting that 60% to 70% of patients enrolled in the U.S. government's Medicare obesity drug pilot launched in July are entirely new to these treatments.
Long-Term Market Projections
Industry forecasts anticipate that oral formulations will play a central role in the commercialization of anti-obesity medications. Novo Nordisk expects oral drugs to account for more than a third of total GLP-1 weight-loss treatment usage by the end of the decade.
As manufacturing capacities scale and regulatory pathways evolve, the rivalry between Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk is expected to intensify across both injectable and oral delivery mechanisms.
