Ciena shares climbed 5.6% on Tuesday, closing at $449.77, as growth forecasts from industry peers Marvell and Nokia increased market confidence in the demand for AI-related networking infrastructure.
The rally follows a series of industry updates suggesting the current buildout of data centers is constrained by capacity rather than a lack of customer appetite.
"I think Ciena is very good and I happen to like optical," said Nokia CEO Justin Hotard in recent commentary regarding the sector.
Comparing Growth Frameworks
Market optimism stems from projections released by Marvell Technology, which suggest demand may outpace Ciena’s internal expectations. Marvell projects that interconnects will grow to approximately $65 billion on a 60-70% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) through 2030. Marvell also anticipates switching in storage will reach approximately $85 billion on a 40% CAGR.
These figures represent an acceleration compared to Ciena’s internal 30% growth framework. By benchmarking these projections against Ciena's guidance, investors appear to be pricing in the possibility that the optical networking leader may capture a larger share of the AI-driven infrastructure spend than previously estimated.
Early Days of AI Buildout
Leadership at major infrastructure providers suggests the industry is in the early stages of its current expansion cycle. According to Hotard, the primary bottleneck for the industry remains physical capacity rather than demand.
"Customers would likely build data centers twice as fast if capacity allowed and that the industry remains in the early days of the AI buildout," Hotard noted.
This perspective highlights the capital intensity required to support large-scale AI models, which necessitate high-speed, high-bandwidth optical connections to link massive GPU clusters. As data centers continue to scale, the role of optical networking, which is Ciena's core competency, has become a focus for analysts monitoring the sustainability of the AI hardware boom.
