San Jose-based semiconductor firm Altera has confidentially filed for a U.S. initial public offering that could raise over $2 billion as early as this year, according to a KSL report. The offering positions the Silver Lake- and Intel-backed chipmaker to tap surging investor appetite for hardware suppliers supporting AI-driven infrastructure and data centers.
Altera manufactures programmable logic devices utilized across telecommunications networks, industrial equipment, aerospace and defense systems, and artificial intelligence applications. These chips allow hardware configurations to be modified post-manufacturing, a feature valued in data center environments requiring adaptable processing architectures.
Valuation and Ownership Structure
The pending offering follows a major ownership restructuring orchestrated last year. Intel originally acquired Altera for approximately $16.7 billion in 2015 to bolster its programmable solutions portfolio.
The business became fully standalone last September after private equity firm Silver Lake acquired a 51% majority stake for $4.46 billion. That transaction valued Altera at $8.75 billion, leaving Intel with a remaining 49% equity stake in the chipmaker.
What Is at Stake for Semiconductor Markets
A successful public debut exceeding $2 billion would rank among the larger technology offerings in recent quarters, testing institutional demand for specialized semiconductor assets. As artificial intelligence workloads expand data center power and hardware requirements, suppliers with established footprints in programmable and application-specific integrated circuits continue to attract private equity backing and public market attention.
