Chevron is reshaping its top leadership ranks by appointing current Chief Financial Officer Eimear Bonner to lead its core oil, products and gas business, while New Energies president Jeff Gustavson will step into the role of CFO, with both transitions taking effect January 1. The executive realignment comes as the energy giant manages ongoing succession planning for Chief Executive Officer Mike Wirth.
"Chevron maintains a succession planning process overseen by the board. We have strong leadership across the company and a deep bench of experienced executives prepared to lead the business," a company spokesperson said.
Leadership Changes Across the Executive Suite
Under the reshuffle outlined in a BNN Bloomberg report, Mark Nelson will step down from his current position heading the oil, products and gas business on January 1. Nelson will retain his title as vice chairman while shifting his focus to oversee corporate strategy and business development.
Incoming CFO Jeff Gustavson previously led Chevron's new energies business, directing clean-tech and lower-carbon investments. His predecessor, Bonner, brings extensive operational experience to her new post overseeing traditional fossil fuel operations. Before serving as finance chief, Bonner was Chevron’s first female chief technology officer and managed operations as general director of the Tengizchevroil joint venture.
Succession Planning and Market Position
The executive moves arrive as the energy company navigates a broader leadership transition. In December, CEO Mike Wirth stated in discussions with the board that he did not expect to serve more than 10 years in the chief executive role, having already led the company for more than eight years.
"The new appointments for Bonner and Gustavson are a 'natural progression within Chevron that gets them both one step closer to being the potential successor,'" said Mark Metz, a senior investment analyst for American Century Investments, which holds Chevron shares.
In the public markets, Chevron Corp (CVX) traded at $211.98, up 0.20%, as of October 9, 2026, according to Finnhub market data.
What the Reshuffle Means for Operations
The changes place seasoned internal executives into key operational and financial positions as the company balances legacy fossil fuel production with energy transition initiatives. By positioning candidates with both financial oversight and operational backgrounds in major roles, the board is expanding its pool of internal candidates capable of succeeding Wirth.
Why this matters: Leadership transitions at supermajors like Chevron often signal strategic shifts in capital allocation between traditional crude extraction and lower-carbon initiatives, making executive appointments a key indicator for long-term corporate direction.
