Cameroon secured approximately $630 million in financing agreements approved by President Paul Biya to fund major regional transport infrastructure, following broader government borrowing authorizations.
The capital infusion targets key trade corridors connecting domestic economic hubs to neighboring nations, representing a step in the country's multi-billion-franc development strategy.
World Bank Backing for Douala-Bangui Corridor
The largest portion of the new financing comes from the World Bank's International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which provided a €347.5 million loan valued at approximately $390.9 million.
This funding is earmarked for the Douala-Bangui Economic Corridor project. The initiative aims to link the major port city of Douala in Cameroon with Bangui in the Central African Republic, improving transit times and reducing trade barriers across the Central African subregion.
Islamic Development Bank Highway Funding
In addition to the World Bank agreement, a second presidential decree authorized a €212.35 million financing agreement, equivalent to roughly $238.9 million, with the Islamic Development Bank.
The Islamic Development Bank facility will specifically fund the rehabilitation of the Douala-Bafoussam highway, strengthening vital domestic connectivity between Cameroon's coastal commercial center and the western region.
Broader Borrowing Framework and CFA Franc Limits
These bilateral and multilateral loan packages follow prior legislative authorizations granted to Cameroon's finance ministry.
In August, the government received authorization to borrow up to 930 billion CFA francs, or approximately $1.67 billion, through both domestic and external debt instruments. Officials are utilizing these debt limits to finance ongoing development projects while also addressing outstanding public sector arrears.
