Boxer Retail reported first-half 2026 results showing headline earnings per share growth of 9.2% to 124.83 cents. The company achieved these results while operating in a South African retail market affected by food price deflation.

For the 26 weeks ended Aug. 30, 2026, the retailer’s turnover rose 6.3% to ZAR 24.1 billion. Earnings growth outpaced sales gains because the gross margin expanded by 50 basis points to 20.7%, even as internal selling prices declined by 2.4%.

"The Boxer performance over the period shows the resilience of the business in maintaining positive momentum in turnover growth, financial performance, and execution of strategic objectives within an external environment that has offered little assistance," said Marek Masojada, CEO of Boxer, in a statement regarding the results.

Operational Efficiency in Deflation

The company grew margins while lowering prices for consumers by practicing cost discipline. In a standard retail model, falling prices reduce margins unless offset by volume growth or supply chain efficiencies. By expanding margins in these conditions, Boxer optimized its cost base faster than the rate of deflation.

"Being able to invest in price for our customers in a deflationary environment and still report gross margin expansion is a very pleasing outcome," said David Wayne, CFO of Boxer.

Leadership Transition

The company announced a leadership change alongside the financial results. CEO Marek Masojada will retire at the end of the 2026 fiscal year. Justin Galloway is the CEO designate, effective immediately, with a formal handover scheduled for March 1, 2027.

This transition occurs as the company manages a South African market where consumer spending power is under pressure. The firm intends to sustain the operational efficiency seen in this first-half performance during the executive leadership change.
