Bitcoin fell 2.8% to $83,198.50 at 17:46 ET on Wednesday, pressured by hawkish Federal Reserve rate expectations, climbing Treasury yields, and elevated energy costs.

The decline for the world’s largest cryptocurrency reflects risk-off sentiment across global markets as investors reevaluate macroeconomic conditions and upcoming monetary policy decisions.

"We care deeply about Bitcoin and the ecosystem around it," said Johann Kerbrat, senior vice president and general manager of crypto and international at Robinhood, in a statement regarding the company's treasury strategy.

Macroeconomic Pressures and Fed Rate Expectations

The downward pressure on digital assets aligns with tightening monetary policy signals from central banks. Minutes from the Federal Reserve's September meeting revealed that most Federal Open Market Committee participants anticipate an additional interest rate hike by the end of the year, following a unanimous 25 basis point rate increase last month.

Higher interest rates increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like Bitcoin, driving capital away from speculative markets and toward fixed-income instruments. Benchmark Treasury yields rose alongside these expectations, amplifying the macro headwinds facing the crypto sector.

Energy Costs and Geopolitical Supply Concerns

Compounding the pressure on risk assets, benchmark Brent crude futures settled 0.6% higher at $101.17 a barrel. The increase in oil prices stems from persistent supply disruption concerns centered around the Strait of Hormuz and Yemen, stoking inflationary fears that could keep central banks on an aggressive tightening path.

Energy spikes influence broader economic inflation metrics, complicating the Federal Reserve's path forward as policymakers attempt to balance cooling growth against high input costs.

Robinhood Adds Bitcoin to Balance Sheet

Amid the broader market contraction, corporate treasury adoption of digital assets continues to evolve. Financial services platform Robinhood purchased $25 million of Bitcoin for its balance sheet to signal institutional alignment with the digital asset economy.

"For us, it’s more aligning our company and our vision with the crypto community," Kerbrat said, explaining the strategic rationale behind the corporate acquisition.

What the Price Action Means for Digital Assets

The interaction between rising oil prices, firming interest rate projections, and corporate treasury allocations highlights the complex web of traditional macroeconomic forces currently driving cryptocurrency valuations. As major financial institutions continue to integrate digital assets into their balance sheets, broader market correlations with traditional risk-off triggers remain pronounced.
