Benitec Biopharma is advancing toward a mid-2027 pivotal trial start for its experimental gene therapy BB-301 after receiving formal feedback from U.S. regulators requesting additional data from an ongoing natural history study. The regulatory update keeps the biotechnology firm on track to finalize its study design in early 2027.
“We greatly appreciate the collaboration from the FDA and are encouraged by the constructive nature of our discussions,” said Jerel A. Banks, M.D., Ph.D., Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Benitec.
FDA Feedback and Trial Timeline
The regulatory guidance follows a Type C meeting held in the third quarter of 2026 between Benitec Biopharma Inc. and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration concerning an open-label, single-arm pivotal study for BB-301. During the evaluation, the agency requested additional available data, including information generated from the company's OPMD Natural History Study.
In response, the agency agreed to review the supplementary records on a timeline that allows Benitec to confirm its final pivotal study design in the first quarter of 2027. Patient enrollment for the pivotal trial remains on schedule to begin in mid-2027.
Upcoming Clinical Data Presentations
Ahead of the pivotal trial preparation, Benitec is scheduled to present interim clinical results from its ongoing BB-301 Phase 1b/2a study at the European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy Annual Congress in Hamburg, Germany. The presentation, running from October 27-30, 2026, will feature 12-month follow-up data for six patients in Cohort 1 and interim follow-up data for three patients in Cohort 2.
These clinical disclosures follow regulatory housekeeping filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission via an 8-K on October 5, 2026.
Market Performance and Financial Valuation
In the public markets, Benitec Biopharma Inc. (BNTC) stock closed at $8.87, representing a 1.37% increase from its previous close of $8.75, according to Finnhub market data as of October 9, 2026.
What Is at Stake for OPMD Therapies
Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) is a rare genetic muscle disease with limited treatment options, making regulatory alignment on single-arm pivotal trial designs critical for developers. By securing a clear review pathway for natural history data ahead of a 2027 trial launch, Benitec aims to advance its gene therapy candidate through the regulatory framework while managing clinical milestones.
