Bayer is committing $2.2 billion to build a modular pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in New Albany, Ohio, aiming to reinforce its U.S. supply chain for cardiovascular, oncology, and renal care portfolios. The project marks a major domestic expansion for the German life sciences firm as it moves to localize production capabilities.

"Bayer has long seen the United States as a key manufacturing base and innovation hub. This landmark investment underscores our commitment," said Bill Anderson, CEO of Bayer, in a statement regarding the project.

Phased Rollout and Campus Structure

The facility will take shape within the New Albany International Business Park as a flexible, modular campus. Construction is slated to proceed across distinct timelines to bring specialized production online progressively.

The development plan includes two primary operational phases:

  • Phase One: A dedicated drug substance manufacturing module scheduled to become operational in 2031.
  • Phase Two: A secondary drug product manufacturing module targeted for completion in 2034.

"As we continue to invest in our existing manufacturing sites around the globe, our planned presence in Ohio will further enhance our ability to serve our markets with greater resilience and reliability," said Holger Weintritt, Head of Product Supply at Bayer's Pharmaceuticals division.

Workforce Development and Regional Impact

The multi-billion-dollar project is projected to generate approximately 600 permanent, high-value jobs alongside roughly 1,500 construction roles. To staff the facility, Bayer intends to tap into the regional talent pipeline supported by the Ohio Life Science Training Center, which is scheduled to open in summer 2027 with up to $30 million in backing from JobsOhio.

This training hub will focus on preparing local workers for technical biomanufacturing and operator positions. The localized labor strategy addresses a persistent industry-wide challenge of sourcing specialized technical talent for advanced pharmaceutical production environments.
