Bassett Furniture Industries (BSET) reported fiscal third-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $0.24 per share, surpassing the analyst consensus estimate of $0.13. Although the company beat profit expectations, quarterly revenue of $82.8 million missed the $83.1 million forecast.
"We are pleased to report a 3.4% increase in consolidated revenue, bolstered by increases in both retail and wholesale sales," said Rob Spilman, Chairman and CEO of Bassett, in an earnings call transcript.
Margin Improvement Amid Market Headwinds
Bassett’s performance highlights a focus on cost control and margin expansion, even as the home furnishings sector faces pressure from cooling housing demand. The company saw an improvement in profitability compared to the prior period.
"Operating income was $2.8 million, or 3.4% of sales, as compared to income of $593,000, or 0.7% of sales in the prior period," said Mike Daniel, CFO of Bassett.
Understanding Operating Margin Expansion
Operating margin measures the percentage of revenue remaining after paying for variable costs of production, such as wages and raw materials, before interest or taxes. Bassett’s expansion from 0.7% to 3.4% indicates that the company reduced its overhead or improved supply chain efficiencies. This allowed more revenue to flow to the bottom line despite the slight miss on top-line growth.
This margin expansion is notable given the current macroeconomic environment. High interest rates have dampened home sales, which typically leads to reduced consumer spending on durable goods like furniture. By prioritizing internal efficiencies, Bassett has managed to insulate its bottom-line performance from housing market volatility.
Market Valuation
Bassett Furniture Industries shares (BSET) were quoted at $20.73 as of October 6, 2026. The company continues to navigate a challenging retail environment by balancing its retail footprint with wholesale distribution channels to maintain profitability as it moves into the final quarter of the fiscal year.
