Barclays has upgraded Carlsberg A/S (CARLB:DC) from Underweight to Equalweight. The firm cites an improvement in the brewer's balance sheet and the potential for accelerated share buybacks. Barclays also raised its price target for the stock from DKK792.00 to DKK930.00, reflecting an updated view on the company's capital allocation strategy.
Debt Metrics and Buyback Potential
The upgrade is driven by Carlsberg’s deleveraging progress. According to a report from Investing.com, the company’s net debt to EBITDA ratio has fallen to 3.0 times, down from 3.9 times over the past 12 months.
This reduction brings the brewer closer to its internal 2.5 times net debt to EBITDA threshold. This threshold serves as a trigger for initiating share buyback programs. Barclays analysts have moved their forecasts for these buybacks forward by one year, anticipating that the recent Sapporo transaction will provide the financial flexibility to return capital to shareholders sooner than previously expected.
Understanding the Debt-to-EBITDA Trigger
For investors, the net debt to EBITDA ratio is a standard metric used to gauge a company's ability to pay off its debt using its operating earnings. By setting a specific trigger at 2.5 times, management establishes financial discipline. They prioritize debt reduction until the company reaches a target level of leverage, at which point surplus cash is redirected toward shareholder returns.
Diverse Revenue Streams
Carlsberg’s business model includes soft drinks. As of the first half of 2026, the company’s portfolio of PepsiCo soft drinks accounts for 35% of its total group volumes. This diversification provides a hedge against the cyclical nature of beer consumption, though it also introduces exposure to the broader consumer retail sector.
Divergent Analyst Views
Market sentiment remains split regarding the stock's performance. While Barclays has signaled confidence in the company's balance sheet improvement, other institutions remain cautious. HSBC maintains a Hold rating on Carlsberg. The firm recently lowered its price target from DKK1,000.00 to DKK980.00, citing concerns regarding the company's execution within the retail sector. These conflicting outlooks highlight the tension between Carlsberg's strengthening financial position and the operational challenges in the current retail environment.
