AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo have formed a clinical collaboration with Summit Therapeutics to evaluate the combination of Datroway and ivonescimab across multiple tumor types. The partnership launches alongside a $2 billion equity investment from AstraZeneca into Summit Therapeutics, establishing a push into combination immunotherapy.
“Central to our strategy to transform cancer outcomes is harnessing the power of immunotherapy and antibody drug conjugate combinations to drive deeper, more durable responses,” said Susan Galbraith, Executive Vice President, Oncology Haematology R&D, AstraZeneca, in a statement.
Clinical Trial Structure and Costs
Under the terms of the agreement, each participating company contributes its respective medicine for the planned combination trials. These studies will be sponsored by either AstraZeneca or Daiichi Sankyo.
The partners will share trial costs while retaining development and commercial rights to their respective medicines. The collaboration's initial focus is a Phase III trial evaluating the combination in first-line triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), with plans to expand into lung cancer and other solid tumors.
Executive Perspectives on the Partnership
“We believe this collaboration with Daiichi Sankyo and AstraZeneca reflects increasing conviction in ivonescimab’s potential as a foundational next-generation immunotherapy,” said Dr. Maky Zanganeh, President and Co-Chief Executive Officer of Summit Therapeutics.
Executive leadership at Daiichi Sankyo emphasized the strategic importance of pairing antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) with novel immunotherapies.
“At Daiichi Sankyo, we are focused on maximising the potential of our DXd antibody drug conjugate portfolio through innovative combinations and strategic collaborations,” said John Tsai, Global Head, R&D, Daiichi Sankyo.
Financial Backing and Strategic Stakes
The clinical partnership is reinforced by AstraZeneca's $2 billion equity investment in newly issued Summit Therapeutics shares. This capital injection accelerates the clinical development of ivonescimab when paired with advanced ADCs across multiple indications, positioning the participating companies at the intersection of targeted oncology and immunotherapy development.
