Amazon and AT&T Partner to Integrate Leo Satellites With Fiber Network

Amazon and AT&T are partnering to integrate the Leo satellite constellation with AT&T's fiber network, challenging SpaceX in the enterprise connectivity market.

Amazon and AT&T have formed an alliance to integrate Amazon’s Leo satellite constellation with AT&T’s terrestrial fiber network. This hybrid connectivity platform targets enterprise and public safety markets. The partnership includes a migration of AT&T’s internal workloads to AWS cloud infrastructure and challenges the market position held by SpaceX’s Starlink.

"Customers have no shortage of connectivity options. What enterprise and public sector customers need is a connectivity platform that delivers greater reliability," said Shawn Hakl, head of product for AT&T Business.

Technical Integration and Deployment Status

The collaboration centers on a fiber-to-space architecture designed to provide data handoffs between AT&T’s terrestrial infrastructure and Amazon’s low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite network. By embedding AWS cloud services into the network core, the companies aim to reduce latency for remote operations that require consistent connectivity in areas where traditional fiber coverage is unavailable.

Amazon Leo, formerly known as Project Kuiper, remains in an enterprise preview phase with full commercial service targeted for later in 2026. According to a report from Morningstar, Amazon has deployed 392 satellites, with 315 currently in operational orbit. Wedbush Securities analysts estimate that a total of 578 satellites are required to achieve the coverage density necessary for full commercial service.

Market Impact and Competitive Landscape

The announcement triggered volatility among smaller satellite-to-phone competitors. Following the news, shares of AST SpaceMobile and Globalstar fell 12% and 8%, respectively, as investors weighed the impact of a large-scale integrated competitor entering the space.

This shift highlights the trend of consolidation in the satellite sector, where connectivity providers are pairing space-based assets with existing terrestrial fiber networks to meet enterprise service-level agreements. For AT&T, the move is part of a digital transformation strategy involving the migration of mission-critical workloads to AWS hybrid cloud platforms to manage the data throughput expected from the integrated satellite-fiber network.

Strategic Stakes for Enterprise Customers

For enterprise and government clients, the primary value proposition of the alliance is the reduction of connectivity gaps. By combining the physical reach of the Leo constellation with the terrestrial footprint of AT&T’s fiber, the companies intend to offer a unified service layer that functions regardless of the underlying transport medium. The success of this platform depends on Amazon’s ability to meet its deployment milestones for the remaining satellites required for full commercial availability.
