Qualcomm and AWS Partner on Custom AI Chips and Optical Tech
Qualcomm and AWS are partnering to build custom AI inference chips and 1.6 Tbps optical tech, backed by a $4 billion warrant deal to fuel data center growth.

Qualcomm has entered a multi-generation partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop custom AI inference chips and high-speed optical connectivity. This move shows the chipmaker intends to capture market share in the data center sector. The collaboration includes a $4 billion warrant agreement and positions Qualcomm as a competitor to established AI hardware providers like Nvidia.
"AI infrastructure is rapidly evolving, and we are constantly looking at ways to get to more customers," said an Amazon Web Services spokesperson in a statement regarding the partnership.
Strategic Financial Structure
Under the terms of the agreement, Qualcomm has granted Amazon a warrant to acquire up to $4 billion of its common stock at a fixed price of $161.26 per share. This financial instrument is exercisable over the next decade. It is tied to the performance and milestones of the business agreements between the two firms. By utilizing warrants, the companies have aligned their long-term interests in the development of data center infrastructure.
Scaling AI Inference and Connectivity
The technical scope of the deal focuses on AI inference workloads and high-speed data transmission. The companies aim to develop optical connectivity solutions capable of reaching speeds of 1.6 terabits per second. This speed is necessary for the data throughput required by modern large language models and generative AI applications.
This partnership complements Qualcomm’s existing data center roadmap, which includes the Dragonfly C1000 CPU. First announced in June 2026, the C1000 is intended to serve as a compute engine for cloud environments. Production is currently slated to begin in 2028.
Why This Matters for Data Centers
For years, Qualcomm has been known for mobile processors and modem technology. Its pivot toward data centers represents a strategic effort to diversify revenue beyond the smartphone market, as that market has faced slowing growth in recent cycles.
By partnering with AWS, the world’s largest cloud service provider, Qualcomm gains an anchor tenant for its new hardware. For AWS, the deal provides an alternative to the current dominance of Nvidia’s GPU architecture. This allows the cloud giant to potentially lower costs and improve performance for specific inference tasks by leveraging custom silicon designed with Qualcomm’s engineering expertise.
