Alstom Wins €1.2B UK Train Contract for TransPennine Express

French train manufacturer Alstom has secured contracts valued at more than €1.2 billion ($1.4 billion) to supply and maintain battery-electric trains for Britain's TransPennine Express, supporting infrastructure upgrades in northern England.

"This project will create more than 350 jobs in Derby and support 5,500 positions across the company’s UK supply chain," Alstom said in a statement regarding the award.

Contract Breakdown and Fleet Delivery

According to an Investing.com report, the rolling stock order accounts for approximately €930 million of the total contract value. The remaining balance covers long-term maintenance agreements for the new fleet.

The agreement involves delivering 29 battery-electric trains designed to operate across regional rail corridors. Delivery is scheduled to begin in 2032.

Supporting the Transpennine Route Upgrade

The new train fleet forms part of the broader Transpennine Route Upgrade, an infrastructure initiative aimed at modernizing rail transport, improving passenger capacity, and reducing journey times between key towns and cities across northern England.

Battery-electric technology allows trains to draw power from overhead electrification lines where available while utilizing onboard energy storage for non-electrified track sections, reducing emissions across mixed-infrastructure routes.
